WORLD’S EPIDEMIC
DISEASES
Human history is undoubtedly stained with the blood of men,
women and children killed in war and natural calamities, but disease is the
world’s biggest killer. It does not discriminate race, gender or color, making
it more deadly. It is noted that in at least every century, records of notorious
disease outbreaks have claimed many lives around the continent. Currently, Corona
Virus is the ‘trending’ disease which has so far claimed approximately 3800 lives. Before I write more about it, I’d like to take you through some
previous epidemic diseases.
In the 17th century, malaria which is caused by a
female anopheles’ mosquito, was a major disease in Europe, spreading to other continents
within a period of two centuries. It claimed the lives of prominent people like
Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and according to researchers, almost half of
all humans who ever lived during that period died from malaria. Despite the
efforts of scientists of coming up with with a cure for the disease, malaria
has continued to affect some 200 million patients each year.
It is believed that HIV/AIDS was first discovered in Africa
in the 19th century, spreading to five continents and infecting
100,000 to 300,000 people within the same period. Researchers claim that between
the time AIDS was identified and the year 2018, the disease has caused an
estimated 32 million deaths worldwide. Even though a cure has not yet been
found, doctors have come up with Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) which help prevent
HIV from replicating.
Earlier this year, a Corona Virus outbreak which was first centered
in China, has affected over 94,000 people up to date. The outbreak has surged as
far and wide as South Korea, Italy and Iran, killing approximately 3,800
people. The name Corona Virus came from a Latin word corona and the
virus is said to infect animals such as bats, cats and birds. The virus then evolved from affecting bats to humans in China.

Common symptoms include fever, a dry cough, mucus, shortness
of breath, sore throat and a headache. It is spread through exposure to
droplets from coughing or sneezing from an infected person. Unfortunately, a
cure is yet to be found but precautions have been taken. For instance, nose
masks are being worn to cover the nose and mouth from accessing the contaminated
droplets. Movements have also been limited especially from the affected
countries to others. I personally believe and have hope that a cure will soon
be discovered before the virus is labelled as a World Epidemic disease.
Meanwhile, personal hygiene is crucial for all of us since it reduces the
chances of survival of the Corona Virus.
